Store rolls upright rather than flat or stacked under weight, keep them off the floor and away from exterior walls, and out of direct sunlight and away from presses and dryers. Leave the original packaging on until the material is needed and reseal opened stock, since the packaging is a moisture barrier. Rotate stock oldest first. This matters more in a warm, humid climate than most manufacturer guidance assumes: absorbed moisture can interfere with how the adhesive bonds even when press settings are correct. If material has been stored a long time, test a piece before running it.
TPU is a thermoplastic polyurethane that gives a smooth, flexible face which moves with the fabric rather than cracking, which is why it is standard for club crests and sponsor marks on sportswear that must survive stretch and repeated washing. Silicone gives a softer, slightly rubbery raised face with strong colour and holds height well, so it suits premium raised chest branding where the decoration should feel substantial. Silicone is generally more expensive per piece and less suited to very fine detail.
Most often incomplete bonding rather than faulty material. Check pressure first - it is the setting most often wrong, and a press that closes unevenly gives good adhesion in the centre and poor adhesion at one edge. Then check dwell time and temperature against the data sheet. Also consider the fabric: water-repellent and softener-treated cloth resists adhesion and needs a material made for it. If the settings are correct and the problem persists, keep a failed sample and contact us rather than continuing to adjust settings.
Only with a material made for it. Coated, impregnated and water-repellent fabrics resist standard adhesives, so a normal transfer will appear to bond and then lift after washing. Manufacturers produce specific films with adhesives formulated for these fabrics. Tell us the fabric when you enquire and we will point you to what is suitable, and always test on the actual garment first.
Most heat transfer materials can be applied to polyester, but the issue to plan for is dye migration - dye from the fabric moving into the transfer under heat, which shows up as discolouration in light designs on dark cloth, often hours or days after pressing. Where this matters, use a material with a dye-blocking construction, or one that can be applied at a lower temperature. Test on the actual garment before production, and leave the test piece for a day or two before judging the result.
They tell you when to remove the carrier sheet after pressing. Hot peel means remove it immediately while still hot; warm peel means wait a few seconds; cold peel means wait until the transfer has cooled completely. This is determined by the adhesive in the material, not by preference. Peeling a cold peel material while it is hot will usually lift the design off with the carrier and leave adhesive on the garment, which normally means scrapping it. Peel type cannot be guessed from the material type - check what the manufacturer specifies for that particular product.
There is no single answer, and this is the most important thing to understand about heat transfer materials. The correct temperature, dwell time, pressure and peel method are set by the manufacturer of the specific material and vary substantially between products that look similar. Published figures across the industry range widely, and a setting that is correct for one material can damage another. Always work from the data sheet for the material you have actually bought, and confirm it on a test piece before a production run. If you need the data sheet for something you bought from us, contact us and we will provide what the manufacturer specifies.
Heat transfer vinyl is cut to shape from a sheet or roll and then weeded, so it suits solid shapes, lettering and numbers in one or two colours. DTF transfers are printed in full colour on film, so complex artwork, gradients and photographic designs cost no more than a simple one, and there is no weeding. As a rough guide: choose vinyl for names, numbers and simple logos on longer runs, and DTF for full-colour artwork or short runs with many different designs.
